The printing process was a new one for me although I found similarities to working in clay: the importance of line, the incidental marks on the surface of the plate, the delay between the making of a mark and seeing its final voice. I am deeply indebted to Elizabeth Tapper for printing the plates.

This series of prints was done in 1993 during and after a particularly difficult time with my MS (Multiple Sclerosis). I have had difficult times since but this was a time of coming to terms (if such a thing can be done) or perhaps more accurately, facing for the first time, what it felt like to experience both the physical symptoms and the emotional symptoms of ultimate hope and utter despair. Simultaneously. The imagery in these prints is a reflection of that. It is my hope, however, that the prints have a life of their own.
