Tiles have been a way to work out my ideas two-dimensionally. I work differently with the tiles than with any of my other work. Tiles are small and "non-precious." I am free to make mistakes or to put something down of which I am not sure or that I am in the process of discovering. The tiles are sketches. Streams of consciousness. Through repeating themes and imagery, I gradually find my way into new territory.
I have worked with carved tiles from 1985. I started to use prefabricated tiles in 2002, painting with black underglaze, as exemplified in tiles done for the 2003 Regent College Show linked above.
